My passion towards woodworking started at age 12. I took my first and only wood working class. I created a treasure chest and a wooden clock for my Mom. I loved it and self-taught myself from that point forward. I have always enjoyed the outdoors and hiking and woodworking felt like a complimentary fit. As an adult, I began building commercial cabinets and custom beds in my spare time.
I have always been interested in doing different sorts of things -unique and off the beaten path. In 2018 at the age of 45, I attended a three-day chainsaw carving class where I learned the basics. Since then, I have been hooked. I'm honing in on my newly acquired skills, I carve out various sculptures including bears, wolves, foxes, eagles, elk, dolphins, moose, big foot and more and even some characters from movies such as “Groot” from the Marvel movies and “Jack the Pumpkin King". No piece of wood goes unused!
When I am chainsaw carving, I live in the moment. It adds a whole new prospective to my mind. I love the challenge that each unique piece of wood and carving brings. No two carvings are ever the same and each has its very own special characteristics. My carvings seem to bring out unique characteristics in my customers, too. They call to different people - what one person passes by, another falls in love with. I love to see the smiles on my customer's faces and their special connection with my various pieces. That delights me.
I mostly use Western Red Cedar wood. Its softer and easier than some other woods and naturally produces a pest and rot resistant compound that makes the carving resistant to decaying. I have multiple chainsaws - big ones for blocking out the sculpture (creating the initial shape) and small ones for creating fine details such as fur, facial features and other details requiring small cuts. I use a penetrating oil with a UV protectant on the final sculpture which helps prevent it from rotting or from mildew. Some carvings are burned for a coloring effect and others are painted.
I create my carvings in an "outdoor studio" on our wooded property in Castle Rock, Washington, My wife enjoys photography and other crafts so we are a good fit. If you have an idea for a piece, give me a holler. I am always willing to consider new ideas if someone has a certain animal or character in mind that they would like to see brought to life...
